In 2009, I drove my 9-year-old son while drunk. That was the crack in the mask. The moment I had to admit I had a problem. But beneath the drinking was something deeper—shame.
It was shame that kept me silent for years, convincing me I just needed more willpower. Shame that wrapped itself around every failed attempt to quit. And even when I got sober, it didn’t leave. It morphed. I traded wine for control, toxic relationships, and love addiction dressed as devotion.
When I relapsed, shame came back louder. Meaner. It swallowed me for 700 days. That’s why these courses don’t just talk about drinking.
